Lincoln-Sudbury takes down Agawam 3-1: State Volleyball Tournament semi-final
The courts of Milford High School saw the state semi-final take place between Lincoln-Sudbury High School and Agawam. The match went on for four long and thrilling sets, at the end of which Lincoln-Sudbury was able to hand out a defeat to Agawam with the
following final sets scores: 25-20, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-21.
In the first two sets, Agawam could not get into the flow to challenge Lincoln-Sudbury sufficiently. However, as the pressure to make a win mounted in the third set, Agawam was able to shift the momentum. Unfortunately for Agawam, it was not enough to destabilise
Lincoln-Sudbury and stop them from winning the final set of the game on Monday.
Matt Joyner, the senior captain of the Warriors, commented on the match his team had just won and said, "We finally got our momentum back in the second half of Game 3. That really helped us heading into the fourth game. I think for the most part, we weren't
looking to win that third game after the big deficit. We were just trying to break their momentum down a little bit and build ours back up, especially after a lot of their fans came in during that game. Coach basically just told us work hard and keep getting
points.”
After a bit of tug of war at the start of the first set of the game, the Warriors left Agawam behind by taking the lead. Once they had the momentum, it was not a difficult task for the Warriors to maintain their advantage as Agawam was putting in a somewhat
mediocre effort. As a result, the Warriors were able to seal the deal on the opening set of the game at 25-20.
The second set of even more one sided than the first as the Warriors were able to capitalise on their pace and play the set in a dominating fashion. It was only a matter of time before the Warriors won the second set as well at 25-14.
After the loss of the first two sets, Agawam responded by taking the lead early on at 5-2 and extended it to 13-4. Agawam went on to win the third set at 25-19.
Unfortunately for Agawam, this was the only high point they had in the entire match as the fourth set was bagged by the Warriors at 25-21.
The Warriors are heading into the finals with an impressive performance record to boast their spirits. They have been able to bag a total of 20 wins at the cost of suffering only one loss. In contrast to this, Agawam was able to tally a total of 22 wins
while having lost one match. The team that the Warriors will be competing against will either be Haverhill or Newton North. The final contestant will be decided after Thursday’s semi-final reaches its conclusion.
