Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus lead as Minnesota Lynx down Chicago Sky 78-69 – WNBA Recap
When Lindsay Whalen is on the top of her game, there are few players in the league who can stop her.
Whalen proved that by recording a double-double without committing a turnover to help the league-best Minnesota Lynx beat the Chicago Sky 78-69 on Thursday night at Target Center. It was second consecutive victory for the Lynx
and third straight loss for the Sky.
Lynx’s guard played like an MVP and contributed 20 points and franchise-best 10 assists in the victory. It marked the very first time in league history a player added at least 20 points and 10 assists without a turnover. Whalen
also grabbed seven rebounds and stole the ball twice. The player ended the game on 10 for 15 shooting from the field.
Teammate Seimone Augustus, who herself punctuated a game-high 22 points on 10 for 18 shooting from the floor and grabbed four rebounds, said of Whalen’s stellar performance, “That's an MVP candidate right there,” “That's the leader
of our team. That is why we have the record that we have. That is why we are so successful this year, because the way she is playing.”
Maya Moore also had 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for Minnesota, who are leading the league with a 26-7 record.
Sylvia Fowles scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots to lead Lynx. Erin Thorn also chipped in 17 points in the loss. Epiphanny Prince , who is averaging 14.5 points per game so far in this season,- was successful
held to just eight points on 3 of 12 shooting from the field.
Minnesota shot 43.1 percent (31 for 72) from the field and limited the visiting team to only 36.2 percent (25 for 69). Lynx outscored Chicago 17-2 in points on fast break points.
Even though the Lynx have already clinched the Western Conference title, they did not take it easy at all in the game. They opened the game on a high and carried a 22-19 lead into the second. Minnesota then outplayed the Sky 19-13
in the second quarter and pushed their lead to 41-32 at halftime. Chicago however turned the game around after the first half and trimmed their deficit to just two, 52-50, heading into the fourth.
Early In the fourth quarter, Chicago remained within the striking distance and managed to make it a one point contest, 67-66, with 03:49 to go in the game. Lynx however reeled off an 11-0 run in the ensuing passage and continued
their charge toward the title this season.
