Lindsay Whalen: Top 16 Performances of the 2011 WNBA Regular Season – Part 1
Minnesota Lynx’s Lindsay Whalen had a remarkable WNBA regular season 2011, during which the 5 ft 9 in guard averaged 13.6 points, league-best 5.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game and in doing so, led her team to its
first trip to the Women’s National Basketball (WNBA) Finals.
Minnesota headed both conferences of the league and finished the regular season with the best record in franchise history and the best record in the league. The team then went on to win the WNBA title for the first time ever. Whalen
was terrific in the post season as well, but it was her regular season exploits which stole the limelight.
Whalen, who was selected by the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the 2004 WNBA Draft as the fourth overall pick, did not miss even a single game of the regular season. The 29-year-old guard pulled off some remarkable performances
in the season and finished fifth in the MVP voting. She was also named in the First Team All-WNBA for the second time in her seven-year WNBA career. In this feature, we will look into some Whalen’s most remarkable performances in the order of significance;
June 3, 2011 – Minnesota Lynx vs. Los Angeles Sparks
Whalen opened the regular season with an 11 point performance against the Los Angeles Sparks. The player also dished out five assists, grabbed three rebounds, and ended on 5 for 9 shooting from the field. Lynx however started the
season with an 82-74 defeat.
August 14, 2011 – Minnesota Lynx vs. Tulsa Shock
On August 14, 2011 at the Target Center, Whalen chipped in 12 points and dealt out nine assists to lead her team to an impressive 82-54 victory against the Tulsa Shock.
The Hutchinson High School product scored eight of her points in the second half, stole the ball three times and pulled down two rebounds in the victory. She was 5 for 10 from the floor in more than 26 minutes of action.
June 9, 2011 – Minnesota Lynx vs. Seattle Strom
Whalen recorded her first double-double of the regular season in an 81-74 victory over the defending champion Seattle Storm on June 9 at the Key Arena. The three-time WNBA All-Star chipped in 13 points and dished out 10 assists
as Minnesota raced to its third consecutive victory. On the night, she played for more than 32 minutes and finished on a 4 for 9 shooting from the field and 4 for 6 from free throw line.
