Lindstedt/Tecau prevail over Marray/Nielsen in last round robin match – ATP World Tour Finals 2012
Fourth seeded Swedish-Romanian combination of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau made a positive ending to their three-year long partnership, as they defeated Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen in their last round robin match at
the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Lindstedt and Tecau defeated the British-Danish duo in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 to ensure that they don’t finish winless in their Group at the season ending championships.
Both teams started in a steady manner, as they held their serve in the first four games to square off the proceedings at 2-2. Lindstedt and Tecau stung a break in the fifth and won their following serve to take a 4-2 lead. Nielsen
and Marray could not hold their serve at that moment and went down 3-6.
The British-Danish tandem was looking strong to make a comeback like their previous two matches, as they hit a blow to their rivals in the third game and consolidated on it to move ahead 3-1. However, Lindstedt and Tecau struck
back immediately to equalise the score at 3-3. The next five games went with serve, taking the score to 6-5 in favour of the Swedish-Romanian duo. In similar fashion to the opener, Marray and Nielsen could not hold when they served to stay in the set, losing
it 5-7.
Lindstedt and Tecau joined hands three years back and lost in the final of Wimbledon in every season.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Lindstedt said, “The off-court ones we keep to ourselves. Obviously the three Wimbledon finals were great moments, but also they are low points as well. We have Cincy [the Western & Southern
Open in Cincinnati]. We are happy to have won a big one.”
He added, "Three years is a long time. It has been a long journey. We came together when we were further down in the [ATP Doubles] Rankings and we played some [ATP World Tour] 250s. I don’t only have anger on court."
Tecau stated, "It was very important to get a win. We came up a bit short in our last two matches."
Meanwhile, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna stunned the second seeds, Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, to capture second place in Group B.
