  1. (3x - 2)/14 = (x + 10)/10

    10(3x - 2) = 14(x + 10) {cross-multiply}

    30x - 20 = 14x + 140

    16x = 160

    x = 10

  2. (3x/14) - (2/14) = (x+10) /10

    10(3x/14) - 10(2/14) = x+10

    (30x/14) - (20/14) = x+10

    (30x/14) - (20/14) -10 = x

    -(20/14) - (140/14) = x - (30x/14)

    -(160/14) = (14x/14) - (30x/14)

    -(160/14) = - (16x/14)

    -160 = -16x

    x = 160/16 = 10

  3. the answer is not x=10. The books answer is wrong...

  4. I have tried to work this out a couple times, and I didn't come up with anything close to x=10. I got some crazy fraction that doesn't even make sense. I'm usually pretty good at math, but I can't figure this one out. Are you sure that you copied the prob. on here right? If you have, maybe there is a typo in the book? Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
