Are A and B linearly independent or not and why?

A = 2i +j

B = 2i - j

  1. They are. You cannot express on of them as a multiple of the other.

    If xA+yB =0 then 2x+2y=0 and x-y=0. comparing the coefficients of x and y.

    Which lead to x =y=1/2. Hence they are independent
