Linebacker Cameron Wake wins 4-year, $49 million deal from Miami Dolphins after protest-NFL News
The protest campaign finally paid off for linebacker, Cameron Wake, as after skipping the team’s voluntary workout to get the managers hear his pressing demand for a new and hefty contract, Dolphins structured a new four-year deal for him.
Both parties reportedly agreed to the terms of the deal and formally signed the contract worth $49 million.
The payout includes $20 million guaranteed money, while other terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Wake was due to earn $650,000 from a year left on his previous contract. However, the player had demanded a new contract from the team with a pay raise.
Due to the stalemate in progress for possible negotiations on the prospective deal, the player had opted to skip the voluntary offseason workout to formally lodge the protest.
His choice to protest seems to have worked out for him finally, as the managers and the player’s agent have successfully negotiated new deal terms, acceptable for both parties.
Wake’s previous four-year deal was set to expire later this year. The total value of the deal was $4.9 million, signed when Dolphins brought him out of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 2009. It also had $1 million guaranteed money.
The player has not given any comments since signing the new deal.
Although the issue of the delay in reaching an amicable solution to the concerns of the player regarding the deal did not develop into a controversy, Dolphins’ management was pressurised to find an answer to this issue as soon as possible.
Finding a way out was essential to prevent any chance of flurther damage to the reputation of the managers, given they were already under fire from local fans and other members of the local football community over mishandling some of the issues lately.
Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross, was the epicentre of all the criticism, accused of meddling with the team’s affairs, which he denied categorically.
