Linebacker Chase Blackburn returns to New York Giants for another year – NFL News
The New York Giants have signed their veteran linebacker, Chase Blackburn, who became an unrestricted free agent after the last National Football League (NFL) season and was reportedly contemplating retirement, on a one year deal, different reports citing
credible sources claimed on Friday, April 13, 2012.
No official announcement has yet been made by any stakeholder and the terms of the deals are also not disclosed. However, some reports have claimed the value of the contract to be $825,000.
Blackburn, 28, started his professional NFL career with Giants in 2005 and has been playing for the team since then.
In his rookie year, he played 15 games while starting two and recorded 31 tackles. The next two seasons were not very impressive as he recorded 16 and 22 tackles respectively.
In 2008-09 season, Blackburn started eight games while playing 16 in which he registered a total of 61 tackles. In the next season, he posted 60 tackles.
In 2010-11 season, he played 14 games and recorded 20 tackles. Following the season, the Giants did not decide to re-sign him and he became a free agent.
Rather than exploring opportunities in the open market, he decided to shift his career from being a footballer to a mathematics teacher.
However, as luck would have it, he was recalled by Giants in the later part of the last regular season after the team lost a game against the New Orleans Saints.
After his return, Blackburn played five games in the regular season and recorded 26 tackles. In the regular season game against the then defending champions, Green Bay Packers, Blackburn recorded an interception against quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, who was
declared as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the last season.
Not only that, Blackburn also intercepted New England Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady’s pass in the Super Bowl XLVI matchup.
Following the season, he once again became a free agent and has now been given another deal by the Giants.
However, he is expected to take a different role in the line-up as Giants have recently added a couple of defensemen to their squad. They have also
