Lingering Groin injury and Morton's funeral rule Gayle out of MiWAY T20 Challenge - Cricket News Update
The belligerent http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221, has been ruled out of South Africa’s domestic Twenty20 tournament, the MiWAY T20 Challenge, with a groin injury.
The 32-year-old Jamaican all-rounder was due to play for the Dolphins in this season’s T20 Challenge but he left for Trinidad on Sunday after it was confirmed that the groin injury will keep him away from the field for another week.
CEO of KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union, the home of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jesse-Mark-Chellan-c66942, confirmed that the aggressive opener failed to recover in time from the injury and is unlikely to return home to take the field in the next week.
"Gayle was disappointed at not playing for the Dolphins, but the injury has not healed quickly enough to allow him to play," said Jesse Chellan speaking to the media reporters on Monday, after Gayle flew back to Caribbean. "He enjoyed
his short stay in Durban and looks forward to playing for the Dolphins in the future," the CEO of KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union added further.
In Trinidad, Gayle will attend the funeral services of his former West Indies team-mate http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RS-Morton-c2375. Morton the right-handed batsman from Trinidad, died last week in a car accident at the age of 33.
Gayle had sustained a grade two groin strain during last month’s inaugural edition of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 Premier League, where he was playing for Barisal Burners. After picking up the injury, the hard-hitting Caribbean opener underwent
rehabilitation in Durban hoping he would be able to play for Sunfoil Dolphins in the latter stages of the MiWAY T20 Challenge. However, the lingering groin injury and the funeral services of Morton forced him to return home without making a single appearance
for the franchise.
There were speculations that he might return to Durban, if he recovers completely, to represent the Dolphins in the final group-stage match, but the franchise agreed not to recall the all-rounder for the later stages of the tournament.
Gayle also expressed disappointment at not being able to turn out for the franchise in their Twenty20 campaign.
“I am grateful for the support I received from the Kingsmead public and the board of KwaZulu-Natal cricket for their hospitality. I look forward to playing for the Dolphins at the next available opportunity,” he said.
Now he has his eyes set on next month’s Indian Premier League to make a comeback to the competitive cricket.
