Lingfield loses Wednesday card due to freezing temperatures
Lingfield became the latest victim of freezing temperatures in England, as the meeting at the venue on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 has been abandoned, leaving the horseracing fans dejected.
The temperatures at the venue have been below freezing point for the past one week, and the organisers were helpless as Mother Nature unleashed its fury. They were hoping that the weather gets better, but things got even worse over the past few days.
Due to this, an inspection was scheduled at Lingfield before the local organisers could come up with a final decision. However, the frozen track and forecast of colder weather saw the event being cancelled in the end.
Neil Mackenzie Ross, clerk at Lingfield, claimed that the racecourse was covered with frost, and there was no chance of racing. He went onto say that things could have improved, had the temperature increased a bit. Unfortunately, it is expected to
remain below freezing point over the next couple of days, which resulted in cancellation of the event.
According to Ross, “The temperatures are predicted to be below freezing tonight. With temperatures plummeting to -7C overnight on Tuesday. During the day on Wednesday they are going to be barely above freezing so we have no choice but to abandon.”
On the other hand, the fate of Ludlow and Carlisle will be decided after inspections on Tuesday, February 7. Both venues are scheduled to host several fixtures tomorrow, but the weather conditions suggest that the local fans might be deprived of horseracing
action tomorrow.
Out of the two venues, Ludlow seems to be more under threat of abandonment, as the track is completely covered with frost. The organisers have also admitted that nothing much could be done about the current situation.
According to Diane Thomas, assistant manager at Ludlow, “It's not looking hopeful at all. The track is still frozen and the forecast is not looking good for tonight. The reason we haven't called it off today is just in case the forecast is wrong as
it's actually 3C at the moment. But if the prediction is correct the meeting will be abandoned in the morning.”
However, the weather has been a touch warmer at Carlisle, which means there is a possibility of some action there.
