Question:

Linguistics question for tricky dialog in a story?

I am writing a fiction story and I have a scenario pop up between a man with a PhD in Linguistics and a man who speaks the ordinary vernacular without much more than a general knowledge of grammar. In an important scene, the linguist asks a question, and I want the answer from "Ordinary Joe" to have a hidden meaning, something the linguist could pick up on. Here is an example:

I want the linguist to ask something like, "Are you going to cook dinner?"

The Average Joe answers to the negative, saying he is isn't going to cook dinner, but plays with the semantics in such a way that, upon closer inspection, he DOES intend to cook dinner.

Is there a linguist in the house?

  1. PhD:  Are you going to cook dinner?

Joe:  No. I'll be home all night.

(The question asks, "Are you GOING TO..." which could be interpreted as "Are you TRAVELING TO A LOCATION..."  If the Average Joe is going to be home all night, he will probably cook dinner.)

PhD:  Are you going to cook dinner?

Joe:  No.  Mike Rowave will.  (Joe will prepare dinner in his microwave oven.)

PhD:  Are you going to cook dinner?

Joe:  No. Ken More will.  (Similar to above, except Kenmore is a brand of electric stove.)

PhD:  Are you going to cook dinner?

Joe:  No. May Tag will.  (Again, like above, except Maytag is a brand of electric stove.)

PhD:  Are you going to cook dinner?

Joe:  No.  But, I'll toast my buns.  (This time the question could be interpreted to be asking if Joe is going to cook someone whose name is "Dinner".   The reply, "toast me buns" could be interpreted and warming his buttocks -or- putting some bread rolls in the oven.)
