Question:

Lining for rat cage?

I built my own tri level cage out of wire mesh, and have been using thin formica coutertop stuff on the levels so they're feet are on something solid. Downside is the countertop stuff has wood on bottom, which is absorbing pee! I'd like to use something like carpet, but need it to be washable easily without being a pain.. Any advice on what I should cover the mesh levels with? Thanks.

  1. If you get some kind of blanket of towel, it will feel good on your ratties feet but you can have multiple linings so if it gets mucky, you can just put it in the washing machine and put a new one in : ) I'll try find and example.

  2. I'd probably get that carpet you can buy for outdoor use.  I would check Lowes or something like that for it.

  3. Just try to use outdoor carpet or a rubber mat.  Either you can wash off outside with soap.

  4. I know a lot of rattie people that use fleece blankets.

I use the blankets & towels, as well. :P My boy never chews them, and they're easy to just toss in the washer.

I also know of people who sell liners on the internet.

    Here's an example. :)!

  5. I would say strong plastic,

It won't stain or absorb smell - easy to clean.

  6. you can put  abit of wood or carboard that has no ink on it they might chew it but u can replace it

  7. depending on the size of the levels you are covering this may or may not work. but in my cage i use chin chillers to cover the floors. they're slabs of granite and can easily be found in stores like pet smart or chinchilla websites. they are also very handy in summer because if you put them in the fridge for a few minutes they're good for the ratties to lay on if they get too warm.
