I was eating at a Hawaiian restaurant and I noticed that it had the same word that the Japanese used which was "katsu" which means explosion. How are the Japanese and Hawaiians linked?

  1. Ha ha ha. No. The Japanese did not invade Hawaii. They migrated in a few numbers there in the mid-1860s or so and againg at the turn of the century. Yes, there was inbreeding, but not all that much.

  2. Hawaiian contemporary cuisine is a reflection of the waves of immigrants that were brought to the islands to work in the fields. to fill a labor gap that was caused by the native Hawaiians susceptibility to European diseases. Consequently,  you will see Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and other influences in their cuisine.

In regards to Japanese immigration to Hawaii, Japanese immigration was sparked by the banned on Chinese Immigration to Hawaii.

  3. many many years ago the japanese invaded hawaii, ruled the country and mixed with the indegious people. the japanese turned them into the hawaiians that we see today. basically the japanese had colonialized hawaii before the US took over.

  4. Katsu is actually a short form for the word tonkatsu - which is usually pork cutlet breaded with Panko and fried and then served with a sauce which is sort of like HP or A1.  I make chicken katsu all the time - the kids love it.

Hawaiian cuisine is a great mixture of many cultures - polynesian, Japanese, Chinese, African, haole (European), etc., etc.

  5. The Japanese immigrated to Hawaii to work in the sugarcane fields, and have been there since the 19th century. They have since mixed with the native Hawaiians, the Chinese, Filipino, and Portugese immigrants, as well as immigrants from other areas.

  6. Pearl Harbor was the first thing that came to mind.  Isn't it odd..."katsu...means explosion".  Okay, I guess just my mind being "katsu".
