I don't know what kind of car you drive but I would find some forums specifically for your car.  I have learned so much from researching Subaru forums and just getting my hands dirty.  I first started with oil changes and other simple maintenance stuff.  Tried changing my brake pads and couldn't believe how easy it was.  Now my friend and I will switch out the entire suspension system or even pull the motor over a weekend.  It's great but takes some guts to actually do some things.  It's so rewarding though.  I love to spend the whole weekend in the garage.
