I have 2 computers hooked up to my router (Linksys WRT54G) one wired, one wireless. Is there any way that I can transfer files from one computer to the other over this connection? Free programs maybe?

  1. You don't need any additional software for that.

'Share' the folders in question on the two computers.

Use Windows explorer to copy/move files.

  2. The easiest way is to put the file on the "public folder" on one computer, then go to "network"from the start menu on vista or "sharing" on the start menu on xp. Then you can access the other computers public folder.

  3. If you want to share files and that's it, then you have two easy options. First, you could use Windows Live Messenger and use the sharing folder feature (it's easier if you use two different Live MSN IDs in each computer). Also, you could use www.skydrive.live.com to share files. With both these options you can access your files from anywhere you want, and not only when connected to your Linksys router.

Since the options above use the internet, it means that their speed are subject to your internet access speed. But if you just want to use your local LAN (the router and two computers) then you could either share two folders, or log into one of the two computers remotely and copy/paste the files from one to the other. From this point on I will assume you are using Windows XP on both your computers.

The way to do this is by assigning a password to the use on one of the two computers. To do that go to "control panel->User Account->Pick an account to change->Change or add a Password". Remember to use an easy to remember password.

On that same computer, share a folder (by rigth clicking it and selecting "share this folder"). Then from the second computer, click on "My network places->View Workgroup Computers->ClickOnComputerName". If everything is ok you should get a pop-up-screen asking for the ID password you just assigned in step one above ;->.

    Enjoy.

  4. One of the things you need to make sure you do is open ports 137-139 on your firewall on both computers if you have a firewall installed on any of them.  Otherwise you can forget it.
