Question:

Linksys WRT54G router ethernet port problem

I currently have a home network set up using a Linksys WRT54G router. The internet itself goes through the cable modem and then through the wireless router. The main computer is plugged in via ethernet port on the Linksys router and all other computers are connected via wireless. When I try plugging in my laptop through an second ethernet port on the linksys router, I am unable to connect to the internet. I've disabled wireless on the laptop and have restarted it multiple times. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

  1. Sounds like a faulty port.

Disconnect the other PC's connection, and plug into a different port (I imagine there are 4 ports?) If it works, plug back into the suspect port. If it still works, plug in the original computer to it's port and see if that gets a connection.

If that still fails, disconnect all connections except the cable connection and reboot the router via the on/off switch on it - leave it off for about 10 seconds or so and plug in only the non-working laptop.

The router's DHCP server might be having a "moment"...they do that now and again.

  2. In a browser, open up the Linksys console, probably at http://192.168.1.1 and login with admin/admin. Has your provider issued an IP address? Click Renew and see if you've got connectivity...
