Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router 2.4GHz?Model WRT54G is my router?

Question

the problem is that i borrowed it and my friend doesnt have the cd or anything. i just have the ethernet cable the router and thats it. well i connected it to the dsl i have in order to play ps3 online but it doesnt have enough signal. my ps3 is in my room and the computer in a nother so what should i do. i tried connecting it to the ps3 directly by an ethernet cable but it asks for the ip adress and it keeps saying that the ethernet cable is not connecte. can someone help me please

You need to set up the wired connection through the PS3.

You will probably want to reset the router back to its factory defaults.  To do this, unplug the little power plug from the back of the router, then push in the reset switch and HOLD IT IN while you plug the power back in.  Hold it in for another 15 seconds and you should get a factory reset.

If you don't get enough range, you can download new firmware from Polarcloud (called Tomato) which will allow you to incease the wireless transmission power. The default is around 40-80 milliwatts, but you can up this as far as 800milliwatts, though that will make the router run very hot and is not advisable.  It should be quite safe to boost this to 200-250mW

However, there are several things you should consider before you risk this:

1. Make sure you are getting the right firmware for your model AND version of the router, as I think there have been about ten versions of this, and they mostly need specific firmware.

2. Don't even attempt this until you have backed up your current settings and have downloaded the latest Linksys firmware "just in case"...

3. If you are not absolutely confident that you know what you're doing, leave it and use the cable.

You can download the install program from Linksys.

You will need to enter the version number from the router to get the correct software.

You can then set up the router to work properly.

You may still have problems if the router is to far from the ps3.
