  1. Cable modems have a dynamic IP address, so you will need to go into the routers diagnostics screen and set it to automatically detect the IP settings. You would have had to manually type the IP settings for the DSL to work as they use a static IP address. On that diagnostics page, switch the router to accept the automatic DHCP configuration. Once done, power cycle the modem, and you are good to go.

    If you do not know how to access your routers diagnostics page, type 192.168.1.1 into the internet browser, and use admin for both user name and password. Then go to the page under the status tab that has your IP info on it, and simply change in the drop down box from static ip to automatic configuration.


  2. If your DSL connected with PPPoE then you'll probably just need to change the router to connect with simple DHCP.

    But lemme guess: the cable guy came and hooked it all up to your computer. Now you want to unplug the computer and plug it into your router instead? If that's the case, be sure to unplug the cable modem for a minute or so to reset it or it will ignore the router thinking you're trying to connect 2 computers directly to the modem.
