  1. First off, I have never had a good experience with a linksys router (no offense). An investment in  a Buffalo (proud owner) or Dlink router would be wise.

A quick test (if applicable). If you are using a wireless connection, try connecting the pc to the router directly using an ethernet cable. If the pc is capable of connecting to the internet following this, the fault lies in private IP numbers assigned by your router. Fixing the problem should be as simple as unplugging the router for 30 seconds, plugging back in and allowing to finish start-up diagnostics.

But if this was not the case. The following may be the problem.

First off, if you have a cable connection, chances are you have an ISP (Internet service provider) assigned IP (internet protocol) address and an assigned DNS (Domain Name System). Basically, the IP acts as your identification number and your DNS is comparable to your "home address" on the internet. Regardless, it is possible and probable that a loss of connection or a glitch of some form with your devices (i.e. router, computer, modem) could possibly have caused your ISP to assign you a new IP and DNS. This would in fault conflict with the IP and DNS you previously had, thus preventing a connection to the internet. Solving this would require getting in contact with you ISP.

Keep in mind that that only applies if you have cable or satellite internet. If you have telephone DSL, the probability of the it being the first explanation is extremely high.

I will keep an eye on this page if you have any other questions, but keep in mind I speak only through experience.

  2. First - Verizon often supplies a Modem/Router. Make sure you are not trying to connect a router to a router. Having 2 routers on the network will not work

Assuming you have just a DSL Modem and you are connecting a router to it:

Go to your router setup pages using your browser. (it's in the manual)

Now find the LAN setup page and check "clone MAC ID"

Verizon uses the MAC ID to verify who is using the network. With your router, if you don't clone your ID the network does not know who you are and will not give you an IP address
