Question:

Linseeds, I need some help?

I'm trying to germinate some linseeds on damp tissue on a plate and after 3 days still nothing is happening. The seeds ended up mouldy covered in gel, which is probably due to oil content. When I checked the embryo, it was a yellow-brown colour and the radicle was a dark colour this is perhaps due to the seeds being roasted. The seeds by the way were from a packet of linseeds in the health section of the supermarket.

  1. Gelatinous seeds like linseeds form a gel or slippery film upon soaking. It hinders water flow and makes them go moldy. The gel also prohibits them from sprouting in jars or conventional plastic sprouters. Sprouters commonly used with these seeds are made of clay.

However, they grow successfully in either the bag or basket method.

It is important to use seeds with a high germination power. Buy a small quantity for testing.

Soak the seeds overnight and then rinse several times a day, drain well, spread out lightly and sprout the seed in a sprout bag for 3 days

Some people say flax-seed should be blanched first to eliminate toxic substances. Anyway the boiling water should be kind of disinfection  and prevents rot.

3 days later spread the seeds out on a towel. Take care that the seeds are separated not lying  on top of each other or sticking together and humidity is constant.

As soon as the two cotyledons are considerably developed and the indigestible peel is fallen off sprouts are ready to harvest.
