  1. Debian is a bit tricky to get wi-fi working. I just did an Etch install on a spare laptop partition, and I had to jump through a few hoops to get it running.

First of all, your router has nothing to do with this. Your wi-fi card will talk to the router, you Debian distro doesn't care about that.

The key is what brand/model of wi-fi card you have in the laptop. You may have to open the apt-get tool for downloading new software (either Adept or Synaptic) and search for a driver for your card that way.

I would strongly recommend that, once you find out the make and model of your card, do a search through the various Debian forums for specific help. I'm not that well-versed in Debian to assist here.

If this is your first experience with Linux, I might make a suggestion: think about installing Ubuntu over your current Debian install. Ubuntu is built on Debian, and is a lot easier to work with for the new Linux user. It can do a lot of things that Debian won't, like installing the correct wi-fi drivers and configuring the device during the install.

  2. if i were you, i would install Ubuntu 8.04 or Fedora 9, both are very easy to get a wireless connection with
