  1. I find this question pretty humorous.   Mint is an aftermarket Ubuntu variant and Ubuntu is an aftermarket Debian variant.  Debian is the core of either of these.  Debian is one of the oldest linux distros still available.  It should be pretty stable no matter which of the variants you use.

I don't care for the way Debian/Ubuntu  or Debian/Ubuntu/Mint use sudo.

    I prefer Fedora 8.

  2. Really, it's a personal choice for asthetics.  Mint will "lag" a few weeks behind Ubuntu's release cycles, but that isn't really too much of a disadvantage.  You aren't goin to "loose" anything by going with Mint.

  3. I've been on Ubuntu for years, It's become a user standard for newbies. Mint just looks like someone who wanted to add a pile of useless things to look more appealing, Ubuntu includes Open Office and such but you can just select the packages you want ( through Synaptics ). Much less trouble and less download time/ space consumed.

  4. mint if you dont want to install codecs.

If you have no qualms about looking up and following the instructions on how to install codecs then use ubuntu.

thats really all there is to the distinction. Personally, I hate brown desktops so that would be the clincher for me. But Im a freak that way.
