Lionel Messi says Barcelona are still better than Real Madrid
Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi says that his club are better than Real Madrid even after their La Liga title rivals went under a drastic squad overhaul.
Since head coach Jose Mournino arrived from Inter Milan over the summer, Madrid have strengthened their squad by bringing in the likes of FIFA 2010 World Cup stars Sami Kkhedira and Mesut Ozil, Argentina international Angel di Maria and Mourinho's former charge
at English Premier League giants Chelsea, Ricardo Carvalho.
The new manager has performed well in the role so far, with Madrid yet to lose a single game in any competition.
With Barcelona and Madrid just one point apart in the La Liga standings, the first El Clasico match of the season between the two sides on Monday 29 November, will go some way towards helping to determine the destination of the league title at the end of the
campaign.
Though Madrid have been performing well in recent months, reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Messi believes that his side will come on out top in the clash if they play to the best of their abilities.
In an interview with FIFA's official website, he said that: “It’ll be a huge game, like it always is. I tend to do well in these games, I’ve put in some great performances and scored some nice goals. That said, they’ll be looking for revenge this season because
Barca have done better than they have in La Liga and in the UEFA Champions League in recent seasons.
“I suppose they’ve been really fired up against us ever since our 6-2 win in the Bernabeu (in the 2008-09 season) but I think, if we play the way we’re capable of, we’ll definitely beat them this time too. They’ve strengthened this year thanks to their new
signings and Mourinho, but in my opinion Barca are still the better side. I’ve no doubt it’ll be a game to savour both for the players on the pitch and the fans off it.”
