Lions’ Suh too much too soon
They say Ndamukong Suh wanted a souvenir and he decided on Cleveland Brown quarterback Jake Delhomme’s head. Probably not but the fact that he almost ripped Jake’s head off, something the NFL really frowns upon, certainly made it look like that. Suh didn’t (hopefully) really want to rip Jake’s head off but he sure didn’t have any qualms about grabbing his helmet and tossing him around like a ragdoll.
There would be consequences and Suh won’t like them.
But the fans already love Suh. Here is a lion with a serious growl and an even more impressive bite. All eyes are on Suh. Lions’ defensive end, Bosch is expecting great things. He said that he believed Suh would progress quickly and that he would be the centre of attention anytime he would come onto the field, which is something the Lions could take advantage of.
The big Suh is already being double teamed on plays and showing the first signs of the ferocity and aggressiveness that makes a great defensive tackle. He got off rather easy against the Browns considering the obvious penalty, or penalties. Suh didn’t just grab and pull on Jake’s facemask, he went on and wrapped his arms around his head, bringing him down to his knees, and then grabbed him by his head once again and threw him to the ground with utter vengeance. The only thing lacking was maybe an elbow and a three count.
If it had come to it, Jake would have surely kicked out. The hit was unforgiving, brutal and over the top illegal but fortunately Jake got right back up, unhurt, though his ego was seriously bruised. While Suh was throwing the Brown’s quarterback around his teammates didn’t really stick up for Jake as one would expect. They went up to the official to get a decision but no one confronted Suh. The Lion’s defensive tackle just walked away from the furious, yet intact, Jake and the Brown’s offence. The fact that Suh could take on two of Cleveland’s toughest at the same time might have something to do with it. Even if the immediate on the field reaction to the tackle was minimal, off the field they thirst for blood.
It is very likely that the Rookie would be fined for the fouls but things could get more serious. The Browns’ Seneca Wallace has been leading the pitchforks and torches wielding crowd. “To me, that's something you can get suspended for, I think. . . . I understand the face mask part. But he horse collared him and threw him down. We laughed about it, but that stuff can get people really hurt.” The League has so far refrained from saying anything about the hit one way or the other except that it is reviewing the incidence. Jake himself has apparently calmed down and said that he would let the league handle the issue.
If Suh keeps it up, he would eventually hurt someone or rip that head off like he has been wanting to. Against Texas Suh showed the NFL a glimpse of what was to come. In that game after getting a hold of quarterback Colt McCoy he flung him a good 5 yards. McCoy too escaped Hurricane Suh unharmed.
His ferocity means more than quarterbacks being tossed around. Overall it hurts Detroit. The Jake tackle didn’t escape Lion’s Coach, Jim Schwartz’s notice. “You don't want to take a guy's aggressiveness away, but honestly that is something that's called different and that's something that is going to get a flag,” Schwartz said. Bosch too was concerned about the situation. The 15 yard Suh Penalty turned a field goal into a touchdown for Cleveland.
“We had an opportunity to stop some drives and just had either stupid penalties or one guy was out of position,” Bosch said adding that he believed they had a good defense that just needed to clear up a few things and add consistency. If only Suh can get the hang of the rulebook.
