Lions fullback Jaco Taute replaces injured Craig Barry in South Africa Under-20 squad – Rugby news
Lions flanker Jaco Taute has been named in South Africa’s under 20 team and will be playing in the International Rugby Board (IRB) 2011 Junior World Championship (JWC). The announcement was made on Tuesday, June 14 by the Springboks Under-20 team head coach,
Dawie Theron.
Theron was forced to include Taute in the Baby Boks squad after an injury to their fullback Craig Barry. Barry sustained a groin strain in the Boks pre-match preparation for their Tuesday clash against the Ireland at Stadio
Comunale di Monigo, Treviso.
Theron has expressed his disappointment at the loss of Craig Barry. He further added, “Craig is one of a few players that have been part of our setup this season that will have another opportunity to represent the Baby Boks at next year's IRB Junior World
Championship in South Africa.”
Taute is expected to join the squad on Wednesday, June 15. That would allow him to be available for the Boks in their crunch game against England on June 18 at Stadio Plebiscito, Padova.
Commenting on the omission of Taute from the Under-20s squad for 2011 JWC, Theron confirmed, “He (Taute) was not considered for selection to the SA U20 squad as we maintained a selection criterion that players had to attend
local training camps to be considered for selection.”
Earlier, Jaco Taute was unable to participate in the 2011 JWC preparations camps, because of his commitments for the Lions in the 2011 Super Rugby championship. Theron has called Taute as an excellent replacement for the injury
fullback carry. He said, “He (Taute) has been in excellent form this year at Vodacom Super Rugby level, and his selection is a logical rugby choice as he still qualifies to represent the SA under 20s this year.”
The South Africa Under-20s squad includes:
John Roy Jenkinson, Stephan Kotze, Juan Schoeman, Nic Schonert, Mbongeni Mbonambi, Michael Van Vuuren, Eben Etzebeth, Ruan Venter, Nizaam Carr, Cornell Du Preez, Francois Kleinhans, Siya Kolis, Arno Botha, Lohan Jacobs, Pieter Rademan, Johan Goosen, Paul
Jordaan, Tshotsho Mbovane, Bradley Moolman, Francois Venter, Johnny Welthagen, Wandile Mjekevu, Courtnall Skosan, Ulrich Beyers, Jaco Taute
