Lions hand over a thumping defeat to Griquas in 2011 Currie Cup - Rugby
South African Rugby Union (SARU) provincial side, Golden Lions, have handed over a devastating defeat to the Griquas during their second round encounter of the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup. Lions defeated Griquas 49 – 11 at ABSA Park, Kimberley on Saturday, July
23.
Lions started the game strongly as they were the first to score points in the match courtesy of their scrum half, Jano Vermaak’s, third minute try. Griquas put their first points on the board with their fly half Monty Dumond’s seventh minute penalty. Vermaak
scored his second try of the game in the ninth minute, to take the scorecard reading 10 – 3. Lions' fly half, Burton Francis, followed with his first successful conversion of the game, to leave the hosts trailing by nine points.
Francis scored his first try of the match in the 13th minute, as Lions failed to convert. For Griquas, Dumond scored his second penalty in the 23rd minute of the game to reduce the lead to 11 points.
However, Lions were simply excellent in their ball possession and ball handling as they easily created scoring opportunities. Vermaak completed his third try of the game in the 24th minute, followed by Francis' successful conversion to take the
scorecard reading 24 – 6.
In the remaining time of the first-half, Lions denied Griquas from scoring but added 12 points to their tally coming from the two tries scored by their wingers Lionel Mapoe and Deon van Rensburg in the 32nd and 34th minutes respectively.
This was followed by a Francis conversion to take the score reading to 36 – 6. The points ont he board remained the same at the end of the first-half.
Griquas, who were trailing by 30 points, started the second-half with intensity but failed to score. The visitors extended their lead further courtesy of Francis first successful penalty, which he scored in the 48th minute of the game.
Griquas retained the occasional ball possession and built a move to send their number eight Jonothan Mokuena to score their first try of the game in the 59th. The hosts failed to score on the conversion, which left them trailing by 28 points.
In the next quarter, both teams tried hard to score but were unsuccessful. However, the Lions finished the match strongly by scoring two consecutive tries in the last few minutes of the game. Lions try number 7 and 8 in the match were scored by their centre
Waylon Murray and Winger Lionel Mapoe in the 77th and 80th minute respectively.
