Question:

Lip Pierced...Infected?

I got my lip pierced last Friday, the 8th of August and it was doing fine up until this past Wednesday and i think it might be infected. It's a little swollen and red on the outside, a tiny bit painful, and excreting an almost clear kind of pus. I've been using sea salt, one to two times a day, using mouthwash after almost every meal (I've missed a couple though), and been cleaning it with Peroxide. I've kept doing this but I can't figure out what else to do.

My initial question, is it actually infected or just healing?

And if so, is there anything else i can do to get rid of the infection.

thanks.

  1. Don't worry , it's just healing

An infection would be if it was leaking yellow or green pus. You don't need to clean it with peroxide.

Peroxide can dry out new piercings. Just use the sea salt and mouthwash.

    :)

  2. I think it is infected, because I had clear pus when my tragus got infected.

To get rid of the infection, I suggest keeping it clean (continue your sea salt soaks), but do not use Peroxide. This may have destroyed/weakened the healing tissue, making the piercing raw and open to infection. If it does not disappear in about one or two weeks, see your piercer. They will most likely reccomend going to your doctor to prescribe antibiotics.

In reference to the mouthwash, keep using it unless it has alcohol in it. In this case, stop using it: alcohol can be waay too strong on piercings, and have the same effect peroxide can (destroying healing tissue)

    Good luck!

  3. The mouthwash & peroxide are unnecessary.

    They actually are kinda bad..

Also, I don't think it's infected. Just keep cleaning with sea salt.
