Lipsky/Ram battle past Guccione/Hewitt into the quarters – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram of USA toppled Australian duo of Chris Guccione and Lleyton Hewitt in the third round of the men’s doubles event at the Wimbledon Championships.
The American tandem defeated Guccione and Hewitt in four sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 after a battle of two hours and 35 minutes to reach the final-eight.
Both teams started the contest in a stable manner, as they held their serve in the first eight games to level the score at 4-4. The American pair hit a blow to Guccione and Hewitt in the ninth and consolidated on it to triumph
6-4.
Ranked 18th in the world, Lipsky and Ram banged in a couple of aces and 81 percent of the first serves, converting 16 of the 22 of them into points. They were flawless on their second deliveries, as they did not lose
even a single point, winning all five of them.
Both teams won their serve in the opening six games to square off the proceedings at 3-3. It was an all Australian show afterwards, as Guccione and Hewitt grabbed three games in a row to seal it 6-3.
The Australian team gave above average performance on their serves, as they pounded three aces and 72 percent of the first deliveries, winning 13 of the 18 first and five of the seven second serve points.
The third set was just like the opener, as none of the two players allowed each other to break serve in the first eight games and took the score to 4-4. Lipsky and Ram struck in the ninth one and held their following serve to capture
it 6-4.
The Americans fired two aces and three winners in the third set. Ram and Lipsky avoided the only break threat they came across and utilised one of the two opportunities they created.
The right-handers, Lipsky and Ram, claimed a breakthrough in the very first game of the fourth set but lost the next one to even out the score at 1-1. Though, they managed to snatch a break again in the third and this time they
consolidated on it to build a 3-1 advantage. The Americans sustained their lead till the end, serving it out at 5-4.
Lipsky and Ram are slated to face the most successful doubles team in the history of the sport, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, in the quarter-finals. Bryans defeated the French duo of Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra in five sets in
the third round.
