I have also heard that to be true or at least a POPULAR URBAN LEGEND!  Story goes that, GOLF was the acronym given by the king, back in Scotland where the game, as it's known today, originated!

Apparently, it's just that;  an "urban legend"...though quite popular.  Anybody that's NEVER heard of that "legend" before, knows NOTHING about golf history!
