Lisa Raymond eyes her maiden gold medal at 2012 Olympics – Tennis News
Doubles world number one professional, Lisa Raymond, believes that something is still missing from her trophy rack and she is about to touch the 39 years of age in the coming days. Talking about that, the American stated, “There’s
something missing in my trophy cabinet. For me the one thing I’m missing in my career is a medal from the Olympics. I’ve won slams, I’ve gotten the rankings, I’ve won the tournaments but to be on that podium that’s something I’ve never done, I’ve never achieved.
It would probably be the greatest moment of my tennis career.”
So, now the world knows that the American number one doubles specialist is in pursuit of the gold medal at the upcoming London Olympics, starting next week. She will team up with her old time partner, Liezel Huber, and try to clean
sweep the doubles category contest by grabbing the biggest medal at the most elite platform. It will be nothing less than ‘a dream come’ true for the 38-year-old year old veteran.
Lisa Raymond and Martina Navratilova featured in 2004 at Athens Olympics in the hunt for a gold medal but they failed to achieve the expected landmark and that was a major setback for the legendary American professional who holds
the record of the oldest women in the history of sporting tennis to be ranked as world number one.
Raymond didn’t take part in the previous edition of the Olympics at Beijing, China because she was away from the professional circuit and almost vanished before erupting back and leading the rankings once again. She further commented,
“If you would have asked me years ago if I would still be playing tennis at this age I probably would have laughed at you. There were a couple years where I kind of lost my way a little bit both on and off the court.”
Her partner, Huber is also 35-year-old so both players are well amongst the category of veterans but they still possess the quality to sustain the number one rank in the doubles category. It will be a terrific achievement for the
oldie superstar if she manages to win the gold medal this time around.
