Lisicki, Davenport and Groenefeld take part in a charity event at Bahamas – Tennis News
Mark Knowles, who retired recently from the world of tennis, was counted amongst the prolific doubles player and possibly a future Hall of Famer. On his invitation, Lindsay Davenport, Sabine Lisicki and Anna-Lena Groenefeld attended
a charity event hosted over the weekend at Bahamas.
Knowles stated, “It was another great year at the 12th MKCTI. We raised a lot of money and had great support from our sponsorships. We had fantastic players down here. The impetus behind the event is to raise money for those that
are in need, and we were very successful doing that again this year.”
One of the Women Tennis Association representatives, Lisicki confessed, "It's always great to come here," Lisicki said. "I've known Mark for quite a few years and it's been a lot of fun to play. The fact that it helps kids makes
me always want to come here to help. It's a nice place."
The event organized by Knowles raised over $100,000 in charity for institutions like Sassoon Heart Foundation (Pediatric), the Cancer Society For Pediatric Care, the Association for the Physically Disabled, the Special Olympics
and Mark Knowles Tennis scholarships. All these organizations deals with the upbringing of local children who can’t afford to bear the cost of playing tennis at junior levels.
Over the last 12 years, the charity event held at Bahamas has raised almost $900,000 from the sale of tickets and donations.
There were some items auctioned during the event. It included some signed rackets from the reigning US Open Champion, Andy Murray, and the two-time year-end world number one, Novak Djokovic. Other items contained the US Open final
dress of Serena Williams as well as a dual photograph containing signatures of Roger Federer and Jack Nicklaus. However, the most attractive item from the lot was the poster of US Open which was duly signed by several tennis athletes. It was sold for $6,000.
Lisicki teamed up with Knowles to take on Davenport and Johnson in a mixed doubles contest at the start of the event. It was followed by a one on one encounter between Sam Querrey and Xavier Malisse. The final showdown was between
the team of Knowles/Malisse and Querrey/Alex Kuznetsov.
