  1. Prevention:

    - dry De-NOx (air-fuel ratio either higher or lower than 1 = not stoichiometric)

    - intensive intermixing against local temperature peaks (natural gas cyclons, coal pulverization, etc...)

    - water/steam injection DeNOx

    - fast cooling De-Nox (avoids the recombination to NOx)

    - recirculation against NOx

    -  Low content sulfur fuels

    - reduced wall effects and increased temperature against soot

    - intensive intermixing against soot (natural gas cyclons, coal pulverization, etc...)

    - improved combstion (air-fuel ratio higher than 1 = oversupply of oxygen for a more complete combustion)

    ---------------------------

    Cleanup strategies: (at stack level)

    - selective catalytic reduction SCR

    - selective non catalytic reduction

    - gas phase oxidation and ammonia against SOx

    - wet SOx scrubbing

    - basic solution SOx scrubbing

    - soot filter

  2. 1) Don't build coal fueled electric power plants, 2) instead use a combination of wind, 3) solar, and 4) geothermal power plants.  Not to mention earth protected (underground) nuclear  and hydro electric.

Cleanup strategies?  1) Produce cheaper cars that use less gasoline, such as the Tata Nano, in order to reduce the increasing damage, 2) start a grassroots campaign geared towards planting trees in order to re-create forests which will eat the carbon dioxide green house gas, 3) promote the carbon credits program in order to force carbon emiting factories to effect a proportional correction to their carbon emmisions.
