  1. I think you are suppose to be observing a classroom for this homework assignment.

  2. developmentally appropriate practice, hmmm??

Better go look thru the appropriate chapter of your textbook, don't you think?

  3. Developmentally appropriate practices really depend on the age group that you are talking about.  Since you are in the "preschool" category, I would say that my most used and poignant DAP are:

1- Establishing relationships at the preschool level through teaching communication, problem and conflict management and positive words, etc.

2- Paying special attention to the need for positive self-confidence and helping children in this age goup gain a positive mindset about themselves such as ("Wow, maria, what a great job you did on that tower!")

3- Bringing culture and diversity into the classroom- especially is there are children of different ethnicities present- this helps create a sense of "community" and "equality" in the classroom and births positive thoughts towards anti-bias in this age group.

4- Understanding that "playing" is just as important as formal "learning" through academic means.  Children of this age group learn through exploration and interaction and play as well as discovery promote this.

5- Consistency: CHildren thrive in environments that are consistent- This is not to say that they are boring, but have a routine and schedule that children can look forward to the next activity and know what is coming next.  Spontenaeity is also a key, but is DAP when used in the right context...

6-Making activities, events, and learning relevent.  It is a HUGE key in planning activities and curriculum for preschoolers that the teacher take into account relevent information.  This means the children's lives, surroundings, home life, socio-economic status, etc.

7- Teachers should also present opportunities for preschoolers to make their own decisions and choices in certain matters.  This fosters a sense of confidence and thoughtfulness in children this age- learning centers are a wonderful way to do this.

8-One of the most important DAP to me is that of creating an environment where children feel engaged, curious, and comfortable.  This means motivating children to learn and explore simply by designing and environment that draws them in.  This refers to colors, textures, lighting, shapes, items in the room, etc.

9- Guidance is Key- By leaning on the aspects of "active listening", "guidance" and "conflict management" and teaching this to the children, communication and positive interactions are reinforced and children learn life skills.  Furthermore, realizing that children often exhibit "mistaken behavior" rather than "misbehavior" at this age group because of a lack of ability to effectively communicate their feelings and needs.

10- Allowing children to express themselves and learn through all the major aspects of growing: academically, through fine and gross motor activities, artistically, verbally, etc...

Hope this helps!  I know it is a lot of info, but it came straight from experience and training!

  4. Are you referring to actual practices that you have observed or practices that are set forth to be developmentally appropriate for preschoolers as opposed to practices that aren't appropriate?

If you are looking for the second type of answer, I suggest that you use your textbook "DAP"- the green one...It has charts of DAP next to ones that aren't DAP.
