  1. why cant you just type it into google? you'll get the answer in 10 seconds rather than one hour.

  2. Easy. With regular food supplies comes a bunch of changes at the personal level , as well as at the civilization level.

    1. Sedentary lifestyles - This includes a bunch of stuff , but was not really possible unless wherever you settled really had an abundance of everything you might need more or less within walking distance, but after food production is a regular thing, YOU as an individual can trade something you have for food, and you don't necessarily need to go and find your own food anymore. This makes trading and other skills possible and necessary.

    2. Specialization - With the sedentary life comes the division of labor, and segregation of society into different basic functions, so farmers, herders, traders and toolmakers were among the first skills to become necessary, but this then means there will be arguments, and someone needs to make a decision fairly , so now you have a judge or leader and then it's off to the races for specialization.

    3. Surplus food leads to wealth (read grain), some people have more than others, which means that there will be rich people and there will be poor people, relative to one another

    4. Language - someone has to count up all the wealth (still read grain), and when you're moving your grain you might like a receipt.

    The oldest example of actual writing known to exist, is a accounting receipt/invoice for grain and animals. so 20000 years from now, the only conclusive evidence that our civilization existed, might be an invoice for hamburgers and apple-pies for a Mc Donalds in Michigan.

    5. Religion - Say for instance, you have a happy little settlement that runs out of food or water, because you forgot to plan ahead and build a dam upon your small river. The people are pissed off that you forgot to build that dam last rainy season. But, being a clever leader means never saying your sorry and means whatever it was, it wasn't your fault - blame it all on invisible (of course) rain god....Bob.

    The great and powerful Bob looked down upon you....lowly peasants and found you unworthy. That's right , that's why there was no rain - it's really YOUR fault. So forget the fact that we didn't plan for a drought, we could have built a reservoir and almighty Bob would still have provided....even less rain, to punish us for not being more faithful to his almighty Bobness. Repent now, you sinner.

    6. Science - Figuring things out for real however, was a serious challenge. Using language and basic counting and arithmetic means that you have to teach that to younger people as time goes on, so your teachers and tradesmen will want new ways of doing things that are faster, and better.

    So that's where studing problems comes into play.

    7. Warfare - If Our city has been doing ok for a while, since time immemorial (since just after the science guys built ye old dam), However, those heathens on the other side of the hill were siphoning off your water into their fields and we should probably do something about that....hum... tell the people that the Almighty Bob is pissed off at the people on the other side of the lake because they have dared to use his water without Bob's permission.

    After loosing badly you will go back to the science guys and demand they find new an innovative ways to keep the heathens across the lake from threatening the homeland.

    =========================

    And as you can see not much has changed in the last 10,000 years.
