List of Top 20 home run hitters – MLB Featured – Part 1
A home-run is a hit in which a hitter circles all the bases and comes back to home plate to score a run. With a home-run hit, the batter does not need any support from his team-mates.
A home-run can be achieved by either hitting the ball out of the baseball park or by an inside the ball park home-run, though conventional home-runs are more common. For baseball fans and followers, here I have a compiled a list of top 20 Major League Baseball
home-run hitters.
20. Ted Williams
Ted Williams is one of the very few players who represented just one Major League Baseball team in his entire career. Playing for the Boston Red Sox, Williams made a name for himself from 1939 to 1960.
He finished his 21-year long career with 521 home-runs and 1839 RBI’s. Williams .344 average made him a successful hitter and it helped the Red Sox win a number of MLB titles. Williams also claimed the Most Valuable Player Award in 1946 and 1949.
“There has always been a saying in baseball that you can't make a hitter, but I think you can improve a hitter. More than you can improve a fielder. More mistakes are made hitting than in any other part of the game,” a famous quote Williams said.
“A man has to have goals - for a day, for a lifetime - and that was mine, to have people say, 'There goes Ted Williams, the greatest hitter who ever lived,'” Williams said.
19. Frank Thomas
Frank Thomas hit 521 home-runs and 1704 RBI’s to claim the 19th spot on our list of top 20 home-run hitters. Between 1991 and 1994, he dominated the American League pitching attacks, hitting 137 home-runs for the Chicago White Sox.
Thomas’ last MLB season in 2008 resulted in a big disappointment after he managed to hit just eight home-runs with 30 RBI’s, so he called it a career.
18. Willie McCovey
Willie McCovey made a big impression in his rookie year in 1959. With 13 home-runs and 38 RBI’s in only 52 games played, the right hander claimed the Rookie of the Year Award.
He continued to improve his game play with each passing season. In 1963, he smacked 44 home-runs to post the most successful season of his career. By the time he retired, McCovey had hit 521 home-runs and 1521 RBI’s. He was the MVP for 1969 season.
17. Jimmie Foxx
With 534 home-runs, Foxx is placed 17th on the list of top 20 home-run hitters. Foxx also drove in 1922 RBI’s in his career that spanned over 20-years. His .325 batting average helped him claim the Most Valuable Player Award in 1932, 1933 and
1938.
16. Mickey Mantle
Mickey Mantle was one of the most destructive hitters in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He represented the New York Yankees in 2401 games, which made him a reliable and durable option for his managers. Mantle is placed fifth on the list as he hit 536 home-runs.
He also drove in 1509 RBI’s with a decent .298 average. He won back-to-back MVP awards in 1956 and 1957 with 86 home-runs.
