  1. I don't know a list of boxers. But I know for sure that Azumah Nelson came from one of the richest families in his home country of Ghana, Africa.

  2. I have heard that the great Muhammad Ali came from pretty much a middle class background, hardly rich, but hardly poor either.  I believe that Gene Tunney and maybe James J. Corbett did not start out as poor growing up either.

  3. i started boxing(amateur).. i am not poor.. no where near poor.

  4. not many great athletes period came from wealthy backgrounds, exceptions seem to be children of successful athletes, in boxing there are even fewer because boxers often start boxing because it is free or very cheap to start at and kids who dont have the money to get into organized sports find boxing as an alternative.

  5. very good question. . .i think all of the greatest boxers became good at boxing as a way of staying out of crime.....places like Mexico, Los Angelas(Downtown), New York(Brooklyn, Bronx) and Manchester are not known to be home of the wealthy....you might also find that alot of boxers come from a family of immigrants trying to escape poverty

  6. Floyd Mayweather Jr. immediatly comes to mind. He came from a very wealthy background. You'd be surprised how many professional black athletes come from wealthy backgrounds. Most Black NBA and NFL players come from middle-class to upper-class families. That's funny considering white people like to put forth poverty and "fighting to survive in the hard streets" as the primary reason for black's success in sports when that's not really the case in many situations. If anything, poverty deters young people from fully blossoming athletically.

Another thing, statistically, a higher percentage of blacks are poor, however, numerically, there are far more poor whites in this country than blacks so the theory that blacks excel in sports because of poverty doesn't hold any water. There would be way more great white athletes if that theory held any truth.

edit: sorry i went off topic since you didnt directly address black athletes in your question but i tend to rant when you really get me thinking about a subjecct

  7. marco antonio barrera, chavez jr, and not many others. Remember that's why people box, they are poor!
