I want to keep my new ham ham alive and healthy for as long as I can. This being said can any one give me a list foods or fruits and veggies that are GOOD for hamsters? Do vitamins really help or do they, can they make them sick?

Also I havnt had a hamster in years so , how many times a wk/mnth do I have do change the litter and how many times do I actually have too scrub down the cage

note: I clean her wheel every day because of waste being produced. ALso I want to keep my room as clean and hamster free smelling as possable!

Thanks all

  3. Well when I was in 3rd grade I had a hamster ( I am in 6th now ) but I read a book that you can feed them :

    Grass

    Apples

    Dandelions

    Yogurt

Any kind of plant ( except for the stem ) like a flower

    watermelon

    banana

    strawberries

    carrots

    celery

    broccoli

peppers like green or red peppers

    and cauliflower

You have to scrub the cage about 1 time a week hamsters can get VERY messy! Hope this helps ya ;) ( Also : My hamster died :( When I was in 4th grade )

  4. Only feed your ham approved food from the pet store, they will also give you a list of other TREATS you can give it.  Clean the cage once a week, and scrub it down each time you clean it and your room will not smell.

  5. apples I love feeding my hamster apples!

    regular hamster food

I think that chowder deserves best answer ( I dont know about feeding your hamster chowder though!)

popcorn with no butter and is unsalted

  6. The best food for hamsters is only the commercial hamster feed mix available in the pet shops. Hamsters need variety in their diet and the best way to do it is to get the commercial hamster feed that contains all the vitamins and minerals that your hamster requires. Give him the commercial feed and you are sure to have a healthy hamster for a long time.

You can feed him treats occassionally. However, the commercial hamster mix should account for 80% of the hamster daily diet and only 20% should come from treats.

Also remember any treat you give him should be unsalted, without sugar and without flavour. Visit the following link for a list of foods you can and not give a hamster. Take a printout and put in on a board for easy reference.

Some healthy treats for hamsters are -

    Bread

    Skimmed Milk

    Bits of cheese

    Bits of hard boiled egg

    Bran flakes

    Carrots

Vitamin drops are not actually required until your hamster is a picky eater or is sick or pregnant. The hamster commercial mix mostly has added vitamins so eating that should be fine for your hamster's requirements of vitamins.

    Cage Cleaning –

Normally once a week is fine if you are using good bedding like carefresh since it absorbs the smell of urine and is very comfortable for the hamsters. This cleaning must be an elaborate cleaning including washing the whole cage and all components like tunnels, food dishes, water bottles, wheels etc with soapy water and a mild disinfectant and drying them thoroughly before laying out fresh bedding and putting the hamster back in.

If you feel that the bedding is getting dirty faster, change the bedding twice a week and the major cage cleaning once a week. Also the food dish and water bottle should be cleaned every second day before refilling with fresh food and water.

  7. what a good treat for a hamster is take little but of bread and melt cheese over it i do that with my hamster all the time and he loves it.

  8. I use this brand called Kaytee it's pretty good they have the food and little nibble treats and the hamster looks nice and healthy

  9. The general food should be kept in the cage at all times. It should be a mix of different seeds and pellets, you can get a good quality mix of food at any reconized pet sore. They should also have gnawing logs. You can give you hammy just about any fruit or veggie, but NO citrus like grapefruit. My hamster LOVE bannana's,apple and carrots. Don not give them iceburg letuce.

You should change the bedding once a week, and while i'm at it, i just scrub the cage. If it is really smelly before the is over(like 5 days), you can change it, but if you change it too often, your hamster can get stressed out.

As long as your hamster has a good mix of food, you should NOT give your hamster vitimans. They can actually kill you hamster.

    Change the water every day.

Here is a good site to get general info, i just put in nutrtion, but on the left it has other things too.http://www.hamsterific.com/Nutrition.cfm
