List of top 100 performers in the game – MLB 2012 Update - Part 32
63. David Ortiz
Traditional designated hitters have become more of a rarity in recent years with several teams opting to rotate players in that spot to have more breathing space.
However, Boston Red Sox does not fall into this category as David Ortiz (their designated hitter) has been producing sensational performances for them over the last few years. Despite being very poor with his defence, Ortiz brings a tremendous amount of value to the table with his impressive hitting skills.
The left handed striker had a forgettable 2009 season and it seemed as if his best days were behind him. In the full season, Ortiz posted the worst .794 OPS and .2245 ISO of his tenure with the Red Sox.
Showing amazing character, fighting abilities and determination, the veteran baseball player bounced back strongly in the following season as he finished in the top 10 in the American League in On-base plus slugging.
He achieved similar sort of results in 2011 as well to cement his place in the Red Sox team. Considering his ability to hit big home runs and drive in runs, Ortiz deserves a place in Boston regardless of how poor he is with the gloves. Nicknamed “Big Papi”, the 36-year-old hitter will be hoping to give solid performances in the season starting in a couple of months to improve his career OPS and batting average.
With some consistency in his game play, he does have a chance to win the AL batting title before he calls it a career. If he manages to achieve his goals, he can be placed a lot higher on next year’s list of top 100 performers.
“I showed people that it's not about guessing what people can do. It's about saying, 'Here, show me what you can do.' I just love the feeling from the fans and when I'm walking on deck I can hear people screaming and wishing you the best. That puts you into the game more than anything,” said Ortiz in an interview
He further added that, “I'm getting pitches to hit and swinging. Once you get your pitch, keep swinging."
64. Josh Beckett
Josh Beckett is one of the most talented players in Major League Baseball right now. Although he had the worst season of his career in 2010, he came back strongly in 2011 to record one of his finest seasons.
Pitching with great control and accuracy, the right handed starter earned his career best stats with 2.89 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Following his consistent performances, he finished in the top five in American League in both categories.
Considering his valiant efforts over the last couple of seasons, it is pretty clear why he was given a $68 million contract in April 2010. While, there is no denying that Beckett’s is a gifted hitter, staying healthy and fit has always remained a problem for him. The guy has topped 200 innings only three times in his ten Major League seasons.
At the age of 31, he seems to be exiting his prime. His reflexes aren’t as fast as they used to be some time ago. However, if he can maintain his current form for the next few years, there is no reason Beckett can’t remain a reliable starter for his side.
