List of top 100 performers in the game - MLB 2012 Update - Part 4
5. Matt Kemp
When he broke into the Majors league, Matt Kemp had three excellent MLB seasons. Showing his sensational hitting abilities, he was a favourite to win the NL MVP award in 2010. However, he failed to live to his immense potential in that season and took a
big step back, managing only a .249 batting average with .760 OPS.
Despite all the speculations, the right hander decided to stay with the Dodgers. Although it took a bit longer than expected, Kemp continued to play his natural game with freedom to finish second in the league in WAR to Jacoby Ellsbury. Following his consistent
performances, he was also named as the leading contender for the NL Triple Crown at the end of the season and he was just one home run short of becoming only the fifth member of 40-40 club. Had the Dodgers been as successful as Milwaukee Brewers, Kemp would
have beaten out Ryan Braun for the NL MVP award.
He said, “A lot of people pushed me, everybody was behind me. I've been blessed that way. I've had a clear idea about where I want to be, and here I am. I didn't know if I could make it to the big leagues without going through Triple-A.”
Although Kemp has been criticised immensely for his defence and baserunning in the past, he proved everyone wrong by sticking to his guns in 2011. Making huge strides, he secured his second Gold Glove award.
After completing a successful year with the club, he was rewarded handsomely as he signed a US$ 160 million eight-year extension contract. The Dodgers will be looking to build a strong team around such a high profile player and capitalise on the opportunity
they have.
He added, “When I do something good, you're gonna see I'm happy. But when something is going wrong, I'm not going to get crazy and slam my helmet, or whatever it is that some people do. I've never really been like that. Your opponent wants to see you frustrated.
And I don't want them to think I'm frustrated when I'm not.”
6. Troy Tulowitzki
Troy Tulowitzki has impressed critics since the start of his rookie year. Making an impact right away, he hit 24 home runs with 99 RBI’s and .838 OPS and led the rookies all the way to the World Series. Since that breakthrough, he has not disappointed fans
and his manager.
With other senior players not living up to expectations, Tulo has taken over as the major force in the franchise. The numbers and stats also confirm that he is one of the best hitting shortstops in the game right now.
Hitting 89 homers with 292 RBI’s .930 OPS and 18.4 WAR, he is leading all the shortstops since 2009. With an excellent range and incredible throwing ability, the two time Golden Glove award winner is considered to be the best defensive shortstops in the
game today. Considering his clubhouse presence, on-field conduct and the position he plays at, Tulo is expected to carve out a lasting legacy in the future.
