List of top 100 performers in the game - MLB 2012 Update - Part 41
81. Elvis Andrus
Since moving to Texas Rangers, Elvis Andrus has developed himself as one of the best shortstops in Major League Baseball. The Rangers were criticised heavily for making that move but Andrus proved their critics wrong by making the most of his available opportunities. Not only he is nimbler on his feet but he also has the ability to raise his game play in tense situations. Showing great determination, fighting spirit and mental strength, he helped the Rangers make it to the World Series last season.
In addition to his batting and fielding abilities, Andrus has a great desire to learn new tricks. He was lucky to work with legendary Omar Vizquel in his rookie season and he hasn’t disappointed his coaches and fans as his 19.2 Fld since 2009 is the third best among all shortstops with at least 400 games. His athleticism and speed makes him one of the most wanted shortstops in the game right now.
“I don't know if I've made a better play ... I have made that kind of play a couple times. No, not in the World Series. The fact that it was in the World Series makes it real special. It's a play I'm never going to forget. You can't practice it. It's instinct, reaction. You have to be focused. In those situations, you have to help the pitcher,” said Andrus in an interview.
It will be interesting to see if he can carry over his good form into 2012. The upcoming season will be a tough one for the Rangers. St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers are expected to give them a run for their money. Andrus will be looking to display his aggressive hitting and fielding skills to give his side an edge over other top teams.
82. Gio Gonzalez
While Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill’s progress was halted by injuries in 2011, Gio Gonzalez posted one of the finest seasons of his career. Performing consistently for the Oakland Athletics, he impressed the fans and his coaches. Since 2009, he has achieved a decent 8.56 K/9, which is also the eight best among all starters.
Gonzalez could have been placed a lot higher on the list but the fact his BB/9 of 4.29 in MLB is the highest among all starters is what keeps him from higher ranking. Throughout his baseball career, the pitcher has improved his game play significantly. His ability to play his natural game with freedom makes him a dangerous customer in crunch encounters.
"When I heard about the trade it was like, 'Wow, we just got traded for somebody big, somebody famous. To come over here and take his spot, we feel honored, and now we have to show why they made that trade. We just have to try our hardest," stated Gonzalez.
Earlier this year, Gonzalez signed a five contract extension with Washington Nationals, which also covers his arbitration eligible years. Gonzalez will be looking to perform consistently help the Washington Nationals achieve their desired results. Pitching aggressively, he produced magical performances last season to show the baseball world what he is capable of. If he bring polish his game play even further, Gonzalez will have the chance to improve his poor BB/9 and secure a better ranking in the next year’s list of top 100 performers in the game.
