  1. McDonalds.

  2. In seeing that you have some obvious "Cliche" answers, no offense to them, your answer should largely depend on OTHER talents, skills abilities, YOU or Spouse, have.

Certainly if either has any education, time, ability, various other experience, then it may be that wiping tables at Starbucks, if you have any other, more valid experience, might be a waste of your time.

Beyond that, since NY is a large state, and we don't know if you mean Manhattan or Albany, we can only generalize. Without question, to live in NYC proper, one might consider every/all options, as well as defining "survival"

A rambling thought... In the early 1960's I spent 6 years at NYU, living within spitting distance, in the West Village. My apt. in a basement was adequate, but even then, cost $400 per month. Survival, caused me to write a short book, "101 ways to prepare and enjoy Peanut Butter" directed mostly to those in the craft, as well as sell my writing elsewhere, my art on the sidewalk, find the kindness of others, open my own office cleaning business, and still be involved in studies and the craft. It was a 36 hour a day job,,, as you might feel with children, etc.

  3. The waiter/actor is the most common in LA.

  4. This is for while you are between jobs:

    Bartender

    Waiter

Acting teacher (especially as a drama teacher for kids)

    Dance instructor

    Construction

    Telemarketer

Retail (it depends on the store)

Or you can get a semi-steady job like working in regional theatre or dinner theatre. (this would be outside of NYC)

  5. My sister lives in LA and worked the early morning shift at Starbucks - they have awesome benefits and since they are open crazy hours; it worked great for her to be home when needed and still available for casting calls and auditions.
