  1. External:

    The place will swell

    redness

heat can b felt on the area

    Internal:

    Blood vessel constrict

Release of seratonin and chemical signals by the damaged mast cell.

  2. In acute inflammation, there are 11 steps

    1) Vasoconstriction (blood vessels constrict) - this only lasts a few seconds

    2) Vasodilation (blood vessels dilate) - This is to increase the blood flow and therefore increase the antibody delivery rate. This causes redness and heat.

    3) Increased permeability of the blood vessel - this allows fluid to leave the blood vessels and move into the inflammed tissues. This is important as this dilutes any toxins in the affected area

    4) Stasis - The stasis of the blood. This is caused by and increased in concentration of red blood cells, causing an increase in viscosity of the blood

    5) Neutrophil migration - Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell that moves to the site of inflammation

    6) Neutrophil rolling - the neutrophils then roll along the blood vessels

    7) Neutrophil adhesion - the neutrophil sticks more to the wall

    8) Emigration - this is the movement of neutrophils through the blood vessels wall

    9) Chemotaxis - This is the migration of neutrophils along a chemical gradient ie from the blood vessels into the inflammed tissues

    10) Phagocytosis - This is when the neutrophil swallows any foreign body

    11) Resolution - Acute inflammation can result in a number of results, hopefully when the body makes a full recovery. However if the damage is too several, chronic (long term) inflammation can set in.
