It’s that time of year again up in Glasgow - a time where the Shawfield greyhound stadium plays host to all the big names in the greyhound racing world.
The bettor.com Scottish Derby rolls into town, bringing with it the top trainers and dogs from all over Britain. All striving to achieve glory, whether on the track or in the betting ring. Anticipation is growing around the stadium and belief is that this year’s Derby can be the best in Shawfield history, especially with new sponsors’ bettor.com on board.
The final of the Scottish Derby is not scheduled to take place until April 10th, but Shawfield will be gearing up for that prestigious night by hosting the qualifying rounds which are set to kick off next Tuesday. The line up for the first-round heats will be revealed tomorrow, which will give the green light for the odds compliers to price up their ante-post markets.
One man who will be in the minds of the bookmakers when they produce the markets will be top-class trainer Charlie Lister. The Newark-based trainer has an outstanding record in the Scottish Derby. Lister has trained four of the last seven winners and his contingent of dogs this year has already impressed in the trial runs. Yahoo Jamie ran a solid time of 29.55sec whilst Farloe Lee recorded 29.73sec.
Lister will be hungry for the title this year. Despite his fantastic record he has failed to taste victory for the past two seasons. Not only that, last week’s Betfair Trainers Championship slipped through his grasp as he was pipped to the championship by rival Mark Wallis. Lister is most definitely a wounded animal and his record suggests his dogs could be attracting ante-post support from the punters.
Along with a collection of Lister runners, Gary Carmichael’s Sniper Petra will be at the head of the betting market after clocking an impressive 29.38secs in a solo trail. Petra has a fantastic record at Shawfield, only finishing out of the first two on one occasion from 13 runs at the track.
It is sure to be an enthralling couple of weeks at Shawfield.
