Lister's greyhounds win two finals at Nottingham
Charlie Lister chipped away at the giant lead Seamus Cahill has over him in the Trainers Championship last night in Nottingham. His hound, Bandicoot Frisky, won the £500 National Oaks Final with a time of 30.54, and Boher Paddy won the Stadium Bookmakers Puppy 480m Trophy with a time of 29.04.
Bandicoot Frisky, the 6-4 race favourite, didn’t start the National Oaks Final well, getting off to an average start, and trailing after the first bend to 12-1 longshot, Memories Blonde. But by the second bend Frisky was out in front, and showing the crowd just how good a trainer Charlie Lister is. Not that they needed further proof that Lister is among the best in his trade after he won the Trainers Championship last year.
Blonde ended up in second place, 3 ¾ lengths behind Frisky, and 3 lengths in front of third place finisher Klockwork Kyla. Beautiful City was disqualified from the race after interfering with Kyla, who could have caught up to Blonde and taken second place, or at least made it close were it not for the interference.
Minglers Fly and Cover Mazz were close to Kyla after she was impeded by City, but they had to settle for the last two spots with Minglers finishing ahead of Mazz by a head.
Another of Lister’s greyhounds, Boher Paddy, took the Stadium Bookmakers Puppy 480m Trophy worth £150 in the race immediately following the National Oaks Final. This race wasn’t nearly as close or exciting as the last as the 3-1 race favourite took an early lead, and held it to win by 4 ¼ lengths over Elwick Archer.
Archer had a clear run, but just wasn’t fast enough to beat Paddy, but he did stay well ahead of the rest of the pack, beating Courtcraft Mac by 5 ½ lengths to take second. Mac got off to a good start, and took third in front of Rock It Ronan by 1 ¼ lengths.
The bottom three all finished close to each other with Ronan in fourth by a head over Droopys Chopin, who finished a head in front of Droopys Noreen. Both Chopin and Noreen were expected to finish higher than the last two spots, and will need more work as they come to the end of their puppy careers.
Lister is hoping to further reduce Cahill’s lead in the Trainers Championship as his hound, Fear Zafonic, will look to win his second straight E.A. Derby, and give Lister his 11th E.A. Derby victory this Thursday at Yarmouth.
