Literary Character Terms?

Question

A protagonist is the main character in a story and an antagonist is someone who has a conflict with the protagonist. What do you call someone who helps or is friends with the main character?

I think it's they're called minor characters. Not sure though...

Secondary characters. They may play different roles, though, such as mentor or chorus (conscience).
