Question:

Lithgow or Calga, NSW?

I have an oppertunity this July to do volunteer work at either Lithgow or Calga in NSW. At either location I will be working doing conversation work for a nature/volunteering organization. I understand it will be cold in both places (10 degrees high). I also understand that Lithgow is a bigger town, but its also closer to the outback. Has anyone been to both? Which do you think I would enjoy more? I've been to Oz before, but only to Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Alice and Uluru.

Thanks!

  1. Personally I would much prefer Calga, the central coast is beautiful and the people are friendly. lithgow is bitterly cold in winter and unless you have lived there forever the people are a bit cliquey.

  2. Calga is on the Central Coast, just north of Sydney.  I would not think it was particularly cold. 10 would be a minimum, not a maximum. There is not much there, but it is near large centres like Gosford.

Lithgow is still hundreds of km from the proper outback, and that should not be a factor.  It is on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, a couple of hours drive from Sydney.  It is one of the coldest places in the known universe (along with Goulburn and Blayney), or it seems that it is.

  3. As our mate said CALGA is on the coast and LITHGOW is on the first bit of the plain on the other side of the mountains. It depends on if you want to be on the coast or in a bit. Lithgow has a lake and the catch of the day is trout or Calga ten minutes to the coast and the catch of the day is anything.Calga is like suburbia just not as cramped and its 5 min to pubs clubs shopping malls while Lithgow still has a country vibe but has a RSL club and a couple of pubs and 10 min from Lithgow your in the bush ( not the outback ) and the towns are a couple of hours from each other...hope this helps
