Lithuania romp to a 78-59 win over Egypt - FIBA U-19 World Championship Recap
On Wednesday night, the Lithuanians started the scoring rampage right from the tip off and routed the Egyptians with a 78-59 blowout margin during the qualifying rounds of Group F in the 2011 FIBA U-19 World Championship.
Jonas Valanciunas, the big man who has just signed with the Toronto Raptors as the fifth overall pick, was the highlight of the night. He landed a magnificent double-double to hand the Egyptians their fourth straight loss and with
it, crushed their hopes of clinching a quarter final berth. Jonas finished the night with a team-high 17 points and 13 rebounds in nearly 26 minutes of playing time. Lithuania’s point guard Renaldas Simanavicius was also in his zone on the night. He complemented
the efforts of Jonas with 14 points, 4 boards and 3 assists.
For the Egyptians, Assem Ahmed once again cemented his reputation as consistent double-double threat and erupted with a game-high 23 points and 19 rebounds. However, his super efforts all went down the drain as, except the young
point guard Omar Mohammed, none of the Egyptian players rose to the occasion. Omar scored 14 points but no other player managed to score more than 8 points and three of them failed to land even a single bucket.
Lithuanians were solid right from the start, be it the offense or the defense. The physically dominating Lithuanians restricted Egypt to only nine points in the first frame and procured a massive 14 points lead by its end (23-9).
They continued to dominate in the second quarter as well and amplified their advantage to 21 points at the interval (46-25).
After being toyed by the Lithuanians in the first half of the game, the Egyptians finally found their groove in the second half. They countered the Lithuanians 17-17 in the third and then eclipsed them 17-15 in the finals frame
to bring some sanity in the finals score. However, they never threatened the Lithuanians at any point and the game ended at 78-59. This was Lithuania’s 5th win in the last 6 games.
