  1. Well, it's only been three days. Your rats will need to get used to it. When I litter trained mine, I chose a corner box so that it took up less space in the cage, and important to use a different litter than what you use as cage litter, but it seemed like you have that already.

It's easier to start training them when they are young, I totally recommend this as it cuts your cleaning time down by ALOT!

It not impossible to train older rats, but they may never get the idea, or perhaps they just want to go where they want to go!

Course you can help them get the idea by placing a few of their stools into the box, every time you change the litter. I'm sure with a little time they will get the idea. They will see your side of things and I'm sure they would like to have a cleaner cage, just as much as you would like them to.

Did you just get the rats 3 days ago? or the box?

If you just got the rats, of course they are not even used to their new home, let alone a new toilet area.

Just give them some time, good luck!

  2. I'd recommend using Yesterday's News cat litter, it's the only safe cat litter to use in the box since it's paper based.

Also, you need to give this time. Place any droppings they make into the litter box and they will get the idea eventually.

  3. OHHH, how cute, I had a pet rat "WILSON" , best pet I ever had.  He died of old age a few years back. I could tell you so many things he did. He lived on top of my entertainment center, woudl go inside his cage and use his litter pan, but was free to come and go as he pleased. He begged for food, took baths with the kids, and took naps on my chest when i took a nap.

Make sure you hold them ALOT, they bond fast and become extremely tame!... When approaching him, i would make a clicking sound with my tongue, eventually he got used to that, so i'd click my tongue and he'd come out of hiding to come to me!!!

ok, what you do is, put a different kind of litter in their pan then the rest of the cage, whenever they pee somewhere, take the soiled litter and put in the pan. When holding them and the p**p or pee, you tell them NO sternly and put them in their littler pan and plop their wastes on their.

When they go somewhere else, say "NOOOOO" and put them in their pan, when they go in their pan, praise them and give them a special treat!!

When holding them, every 30 minutes put them back in their tray.

But, most imporantly, make sure the bedding in the rest of the cage is DIFFERENT than what you put in their litter pan. When you start this, put the stinky stuff in the pan to make it smell like a bathroom should.

they catch on fast, mine was litter trained in no time!!!
