Little Sensation runs a blinder in Peterborough Derby heats
Little Sensation displayed great ability to dominate the field last night in the Peterborough Derby, setting the new track record of 25.05sec over the 420m.
The John Smiths' sponsored event boasts a winner’s prize of £10,000 and has attracted some very strong runners. Eight heats were on show last night and trainer Pat Rosney’s star, Sensation, dominated in the fourth.
Sensation made his return to the course and distance after missing out on landing the Bettor.com Peterborough Puppy Derby final back in April.
The odds compilers didn’t let the defeat affect their decision to install him as the ante-post market favourite, and were right to do so - what a performance.
He certainly looked the best on paper, but something which I’ve pressed on before is that predicting the outcome of races which have many inexperienced runners can often have its problems, with runners likely to show marked improvements at any time.
Maxine Locke’s undefeated Droopys Cruyff’s took the opening heat in a respectable time of 25.32sec. The youngster has only run three races to date and may be the one who stuns the punters in the coming stages of the competition.
Julie Bateson’s Blood Of Kings left an impression in heat five after beating Mark Wallis's eyecatcher Rockburst Canyon in 25.22sec.
The extremely fast known sprinter Rotar Wing also had his name on the racing card, making it his first ever 420m competition.
I have always been a fan of the David Pruh’s trained charge and although he finished second in heat eight, he still manages to qualify to the second round and is worth a few quid at 21-2.
The other winners of the night were Brandy Man (25.47sec), Colliery Lad (25.20sec), Zaheer (25.28sec), Step On Lee (25.45sec) and Bim Bam Boozle (25.54sec).
