Little Village leads the line-up for the Iradio Iwake Up Apprentice Handicap at Dundalk on 4th May
The Iradio Iwake Up Apprentice Handicap will be held at Dundalk over five furlongs on Friday, 4th May. Competing for the €4,830 purse are fourteen three-year and older thoroughbreds.
Quite a handful of entries among the line-up have raced pretty regularly at Dundalk, even during the new season, but have failed to claim any of the races. There two most celebrated candidates for the race, not because they have excelled at Dundalk rather due to their seasonal debuts getting translated into wins.
Little Village and Phebes Wish dominated their first outing of the 2012 season.
Little Village, Captain Rio’s six-year-old bay mare out of mare, Rainbow Princess, won the Navan Chairman Handicap at Navan over six furlongs on 29th April. Accompanied by L. F. Roche, Little Village yanked off the victory from the 4/1 favourite of the race, Stones Peak, who then had to settle as the runner up.
She led Stones Peak by one and a half lengths and was soon joined in by Jouster.
The victory was not only a seasonal debut rather was the first ever career success for the six-year-old.
Her final race of the 2011 season was at Dundalk on 11th November over seven furlongs in the Follow Dundalk On Facebook Handicap. She could not make much out of the opportunity as she finished thirteenth on the field of fourteen.
The race was won by the 11/4 favourite of the race, Ashton Rose, who led the runner up, Trotting Weasel, by a slight neck’s margin.
Settling third behind the winner was Heir To The Mint.
Today Little Village is up for the second career start at Dundalk and does hold strong chances after delivering impressively during the seasonal debut.
Another note worthy entry for the race is Phebes Wish, Diamond Green’s three-year-old bay gelding out of mare, Kathoe. He won the Ladbrokes Bet On Your Mobile Handicap at Wolverhampton over six furlongs on 12th April. It was a narrow victory for Phebes Wish who had the runner up, Trending, right at the heels.
The three-year-old has not raced at Dundalk before and will experience racing through a brand new race course during the second outing of the season.
